Norman’s Sermon at St Francis Church

First Sunday of Advent

 ~ Norman Lindo ~

I speak to you not on my own authority but in the name of the father Son and Holy Spirit.

May the word of my mouth and the meditation of all our hearts be acceptable in thy sight our strength and our Redeemer Amen.

Living in the country I am sure most of us are familiar with a bush call Christmas bush or bitter bush. This plant will bloom every year as the season of Advent and Christmas approaches , haven been in constant contact with this plant in my pastures it can be a nuisance because of the fragrant and pollen it releases which can be very uncomfortable for those of us who suffer from asthma. But just like all things created by God it has it uses and is a constant reminder to us that the season of Advent and Christmas is at hand.

Into today’s gospel Jesus is using a simple illustration which is meant to point to the second coming. In St Luke’s Chapter 21 verse 30-31 “When they now shoot forth, you see and know of your own self that the summer is now right at hand. So likewise ye when you see these thing come to pass know ye that the kingdom of God is near at hand, and the Lord shall be king over all the earth in that day shall there be one Lord and his name one. And the Lord my God shall come and all the saints with him.”

Brothers and Sisters the signs are eminent for all to see in today’s world, there will be wars nations against nation, Christian are been put to the sword. Recently we heard about the attack and kayos in Paris where innocent people are killed. Coming closer home the killing is so alarming that our little children are abused and killed. The news reported that 50 were killed this year alone.                                                                                                                              Elderly person are murdered for their possession, all this my friend I say to you today those who reject Christ as Savior will face him as Judge. Turn from your sins to Christ today; turn to him while you still may. This season reminds us of Christ return and one day mankind will witness the great event of the second coming the return of Jesus Christ and what a day that will be, the one who ascended to heaven long ago will return to this earth, but his promise is sure that he was going to prepare a place for us and one day he will come again and this will command the attention of all. The earth it will be head line news “Behold He is coming with clouds and every eyes will see Him.

Jesus said He would come back but the people continue to live in disobedience as though He would never return. There have also been many false predictions about the day of Christ second coming despite our Lord’s empathic words. But on that day and hour, hour no one knows not even the angels in heaven but our Father only. Christ told his followers that instead of trying to predict the date of his return they should watch and be ready. But his delay is only because of Gods patience with us. For He is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. Paul tells us that Christians ought to live soberly, righteously and Godly in the light of Christ certain return are we ready to meet Him. Hymn 34 from the CPWI verse 1 Come thou long expected Jesus. Born to set my people free from our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in thee.

In Paul letter to the Thessalothains his prayers are filled with thanks, rejoicing and requests relating to details of his ministry. They need guidance in areas of morality, holiness and practical church affairs strengthen them more firmly in the cross which must always be the object of our faith and the cross of Jesus alone make this relationship possible abounding in love towards one another and all men which will count to pass as the Cross of Jesus is more and more understood.(In the same passage verse 12 says and the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another and towards all men even as we do towards you.)

Friends compassion puts love into action don’t say it’s not my business it’s all our business its Gods business it’s a command that He gave us. You shall love your neighbor as yourself Amen. Jesus quotes this verse and interprets it as not placing any limitations on loving those around us making other concerns. Our own is what the Lord call us to do making persecution, suffering and injustice of our fellow human being our own. It is the Business of all who follow Christ.

From a human stand point there is no solution for the struggles of the world. Leaders are naturally frustrated in trying to deal with the increasingly problem of society. The only complete and permanent solution is found in the return of Christ on earth. When he comes He will set up his Kingdom. He will rule the nation in righteousness and the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Glory of the Lord. As we await our Savior’s return let us keep on praying, working and watching while looking for the blessed hope, our only hope for this world and as this world gets darker the promised return of Gods Son gets brighter.

To claim that Christ will come today may result in a false alarm. But to believers that Christ may come today and that we will have to answer to him will motivate us to live for him. Living with expectancy and delight, obedience should be our main concern patiently waiting praying, watching and trusting. Although circumstances may seem bleak at present there is a better day coming. Our strength and consolation is that Christ coming is sure.

As believers we have something to look forward to that is even more exciting than the anticipation of the budding flowers or the Christmas bush God has made many promises in his word and each one has been and will be fulfilled. But the certainty that Christ will return is one of the greatest promise of all. Although no one can know the exact day we have God’s promise that Jesus will come back. As we celebrate we have good reason for optimism if we are looking for Christ return. Jesus said “Surely I am coming quickly even so come Lord Jesus comes.
